Big Joy is the first of two restaurants that we have visited recently – come back Saturday for a story about another – that offer a fun, modern American-style take on traditional flavors from Asia. This time out, the flavors are Korean, and they’re offered principally in either wraps or in bowls. The inspiration behind this place seems to be fast casual burrito joints like Moe’s or Willy’s, where guests walk down a line selecting ingredients to add to their order. All of their principal dishes of bibimbaps or burritos start as vegetarian offerings, although a few meats can be added. About a year ago, Marie and I visited a restaurant on Collier Road in Atlanta called Patrick’s Sub Shop. It is set up in a former Shrimp Boats building, one of an estimated 95 that were erected around the southeast in the 1960s and 1970s, before the chain, a small-player rival to the likes of Cedric’s and Captain D’s, folded. If readers will forgive a little boasting when we usually strive for a little humility and, particularly where our fumbling photography is concerned, forgiveness, today’s entry is quite a milestone for us. The Rib Ranch is the 200th barbecue restaurant that we have featured at our blog. We’ve a long ways to go before scaling the dizzy heights of some of those Texas-based barbecue blogs – the astonishing Full Custom Gospel BBQ has three times as many, but also a four-year head start – but we are quite proud to have visited and photographed and presented so many places. Several years ago, an online buddy of mine named Michael came from California to meet in person the sixty-eleven friends that he’d made in Atlanta. The trip worked out really well for him; one of those circles of friends had another friend visiting from Jacksonville. Presto Latin Cantina, Marietta GA (CLOSED)
The real world had been doing that stupid thing that the real world sometimes does. It had been ages since I saw our old friend David; I suggested that we have lunch, and he suggested we meet up at a place near the Big Chicken called Presto. It’s a general “Latin” restaurant that is principally Columbian, but they offer recipes from Mexico and Cuba and everyplace else south of Florida. Pizza 3.14, Marietta GA (CLOSED)
This is Marie, contributing a small article about a local pizza joint we tried out. No one enjoyed the visit more than the baby did, because they have an arcade with a game that shows trucks jumping Monster-Truck-style over unlikely bits of terrain, and the game had a wheel and lever and buttons.
