Zunzi’s, Savannah GA

Last month, we enjoyed a six-day trip in south Georgia for Christmas, and we’ll be covering our new experiences over the next week and a half. I wanted to make sure that we got a new story from Savannah this time out. I figure any opportunity to stop into this great city is one worth taking, and I’m glad that we’ve resolved to come here a little more frequently on our travels. Last year, one of our readers recommended that we visit this teeny little carry-out room on York Street and try their amazing hummus. I’m not quite sure that Marie is one hundred percent satisfied that we did. I think she liked the food okay, but she got humbled in a no-holds barred battle of puns with one of the employees here. It really was a sight to see. Continue reading “Zunzi’s, Savannah GA”

Victory Sandwich Bar, Decatur GA

I sure am glad that we got together with Bella Vivere and with Spatialdrift for lunch one Saturday last month. Not just because we all enjoy each other’s company and I think we get good blogging ideas from each other, and not because the place that was suggested, Victory Sandwich Bar, turned out to be really tasty and a great little lunch, but because, at last, I know the best place to park in Decatur. Emily told me about a secret weekend parking spot that is so darn wonderful that, should she ever want to head up to Athens for a Saturday, I’m going to let her and Adam in on my secret parking spot up there as well. The General Muir, Atlanta GA

I said the other day that neither celebrity chefs nor advance-opening hype really interest us as much as either longevity or reports of great food from people we trust. The “pre-release” hype is just the worst. I don’t know whether anything kills my desire to visit a restaurant as much as constant “advance looks” at its interior. Let me guess: it’s going to look more like a restaurant than a greenhouse, and might possibly serve cocktails in mason jars. Continue reading “The General Muir, Atlanta GA”

Villains Wicked Heroes, Atlanta GA (CLOSED)

One of my other blogs is a tribute to the British comic 2000 AD, and I recently finished writing a story there about what we might term believable villainy. Meanwhile, at the intersection of Peachtree and 8th Street in Midtown, a new restaurant called Villains opened last month. It draws its design elements from unbelievable villainy, celebrating comic book arch-enemies and box office bad guys. If you’re looking for a place to meet up with another member of the Legion of Doom and discuss your nefarious schemes for global domination, then this might be the place for you. Alon’s Bakery, Dunwoody GA (take two)

(Every once in a while, Marie goes to a restaurant that I’d visited without her, and about which I’d written a chapter, and feels that I could have captured it a little better. Rather than revising our previous story about Alon’s, here’s a revisit.)

Dear Grant,

I had the chance to go to Alon’s and didn’t think you said all there was to say about the place. Maybe you could add just a little more, at least in the way of photos? Even if not, at least you’ll know what kind of photos my phone is capable of, so I will be able to use it instead of borrowing the camera. Continue reading “Alon’s Bakery, Dunwoody GA (take two)”

Presto Latin Cantina, Marietta GA (CLOSED)

The real world had been doing that stupid thing that the real world sometimes does. It had been ages since I saw our old friend David; I suggested that we have lunch, and he suggested we meet up at a place near the Big Chicken called Presto. It’s a general “Latin” restaurant that is principally Columbian, but they offer recipes from Mexico and Cuba and everyplace else south of Florida. On weekends, they not only have live music, but a number of traditional Columbian soups and stews. Continue reading “Presto Latin Cantina, Marietta GA (CLOSED)”

Firehouse Subs, Sandy Springs GA

A lot has gone on since the last time that I had occasion to write about Firehouse Subs more than a year and a half ago. They’ve expanded wildly in such a short time, opening about a hundred more stores – there are more than 500 now – and widening their footprint into ten more states than when I last wrote. Plus, they’ve installed a Coca-Cola Freestyle machine into every one of their locations, making them the first national chain to do so. Continue reading “Firehouse Subs, Sandy Springs GA”
