On our previous trip to Tennessee, we stopped for supper at Mojo Burrito in Red Bank and enjoyed the visit a lot. This small chain has three stores, and one of them, conveniently, is not far from I-75, absolutely perfect for people traveling between Knoxville and Atlanta who don’t have lots of time to detour into Chattanooga properly. That described our situation just perfectly. Continue reading “Mojo Burrito, Chattanooga TN”

Marion’s Piazza, Dayton OH
This is Marie, contributing an article about Marion’s Piazza. Not a misspelling or typo – that is actually their name. They aren’t putting a weird spin on the misspelling-for-advertising gimmick, but rather the founder wanted to have an Italian piazza experience, knew that was not exactly practical in the coolish climes of Dayton, and made an indoor courtyard. This was unusual at the time (1965), because his principal local competition offered only carry-out. The place hasn’t been glossed over with a modern sheen, either – they still put paper orders up on a spinning wooden rack, for the exceedingly efficient-looking pizza team behind the counter to make the pies in full view and very, very quickly. Puckett’s Grocery & Restaurant, Nashville TN
It was a very silly set of circumstances that led us to Puckett’s. Tory first suggested it when my daughter asked whether we could get some fried chicken in Nashville, only not, she underlined, the crazy hot lava death kind that I enjoy so much. I mentioned that to Tory and she said that Puckett’s would work for us. Unfortunately, they were closed for a private party on Friday evening, which is how we ended up at Tazza instead. Then at some point, my daughter, mercurial as ever, decided that she didn’t want fried, or any kind of chicken whatever, at any time in her life ever again. She lasted about a week; Marie’s chicken alfredo pasta was enough to shake the girlchild out of her reverie. Continue reading “Puckett’s Grocery & Restaurant, Nashville TN”
Blue Moon Pizza, Smyrna GA
This is Marie, contributing an article about a restaurant experience where we didn’t even have dessert. Unusual, I know.
We were temporarily teenagerless and Grant wanted to treat me to dinner at a place I picked. I thought back to the non-dairy days and recalled a dinner where I had quite a lovely salad but would have much preferred a big gooey slab of cheesy pizza, and picked Blue Moon Pizza. Grant had seen that they had another branch closer to where we were than the one we had visited previously and we gave that one a go. Continue reading “Blue Moon Pizza, Smyrna GA”
Noche Tequila & Tapas, Vinings GA (CLOSED)
The good people at Urbanspoon have, correctly (he said with entirely affected and playful pretension), determined that Atlanta is one of the hotbeds of great food writing among the hobbyists and bloggers, and organized a little get-together and happy hour for our community at Noche in Vinings a couple of weeks ago. I was glad to spend a little time meeting some Urbanspoon Prime users who make that service so terrific, and visiting with some of our friends, including Malika from Atlanta Restaurant Blog and Marilyn from Atlanta etc., and was glad to meet more bloggers, including fellow Bulldawg Sandy from Bella Vivere and Allison, The Newbie Foodie, who is relocating to the west coast soon. Go check out all their blogs, if you haven’t already! Continue reading “Noche Tequila & Tapas, Vinings GA (CLOSED)”
Figo Pasta, Atlanta GA
It’s not like we are scheming to visit every one of Figo’s locations in Atlanta, but the road took us to a fourth store on Saturday. The location on Collier Road was actually the chain’s first, and it opened in 2002 for carry-out only. The last decade has seen Figo grow to, at present, seven stores, and inspire at least two imitators in the southeast. We have written about Figo twice before, and don’t often craft revisit articles for the blog, but this was a fun little event that we wanted our readers to know about. Continue reading “Figo Pasta, Atlanta GA”
Las Tortas Locas, Marietta GA
About a month ago, when I was having some Mexican-fare lunches on Buford Highway, I mentioned that I owed Las Tortas Locas another visit. On that occasion, I got so wrapped up in the book that I was reading that I genuinely did not pay any attention to the food that I was eating. Plus, I deprived myself of what looked like a terrific salsa bar. Continue reading “Las Tortas Locas, Marietta GA”
