Snow White Drive-In, Lebanon TN

On my Nashville to-do list: visit a whole lot more hot chicken places, visit a whole lot more barbecue places, and see Brooke and Matt get married. We marked off one of the three on this trip, and slightly dented the very, very long barbecue to-do list. Continue reading “Snow White Drive-In, Lebanon TN”

Gondola Pizza House, Tullahoma TN

Well, this is faintly ridiculous. I count at least five restaurants in middle Tennessee calling themselves Gondola Pizza House, in the towns of Cookeville (which has branded itself “The Original”), Crossville, Hermitage, McMinnville, and Tullahoma. I saw the sign for the Tullahoma store online someplace and insisted that we had to detour and visit it one day. Then I learned of the other stores, and phoned them, wondering whether they were ever part of a chain. Everybody with whom I spoke insisted that they were independent and were never affiliated with each other. Continue reading “Gondola Pizza House, Tullahoma TN”

Tara Humata, Alpharetta GA

There was one little period last month where, across three days, we published three stories about Mexican-style food. We wrote about the opening of the Kennesaw Tin Lizzy’s, and then Marie wrote about her trip to a new burrito joint in Athens, and then I shared my trip to the mostly traditional Mama’s in Atlanta. The result, of course, that about the time I clicked “publish” on that third story, I was craving chips and salsa, and didn’t care where I got it. This happens about four times a year. Fortunately, I had some comp time at work and was leaving early to go visit that new Whole Foods in Avalon, and an old favorite was just a couple of miles away. Riverside Cafe, St. Marys GA

This is Marie, contributing an article about Riverside in St. Marys. I’d taken a rare opportunity to kidnap my boy for a weekend at my folks’ while Grant and the teenager did their own thing. It worked so well we plan to do it in reverse this spring. Continue reading “Riverside Cafe, St. Marys GA”

Photo Post 19: Repurposed Shrimp Boats in Decatur GA

I’ve been telling myself for a really long time to get over to this former Shrimp Boats at 2139 Lawrenceville Highway in Decatur and take some pictures of it. The one that accompanied our first story (linked above) was contributed by a reader. Last month, I stopped by to see it in person. Continue reading “Photo Post 19: Repurposed Shrimp Boats in Decatur GA”

Viceroy Royal Indian Dining, Dunwoody GA

So Marie was out of town with our son, and, as regular readers might recall, she doesn’t particularly care for Indian food. I dropped our friends Helen and Vincent a line. “We can eat all the Indian food we want!” I had a couple of places in mind that I wanted to try, but Helen said that I’d been avoiding one of her favorite Atlanta-area Indian restaurants, Viceroy in Dunwoody, long enough. They are best known for their weekend lunch buffets, but we came in the evening and ordered enough food between the three of us – thanks to a pair of sampler platters – that we effectively made a buffet of our own. Aurelio’s Pizza, Marietta GA

I made a factual error in the summer when I wrote about Nancy’s Pizza, a large Illinois-based chain with two stores in Atlanta. I wrote then that these were “the only places for more than a hundred miles where anybody can get a stuffed Chicago pie,” and that’s not true. Another mid-sized Illinois chain, Aurelio’s, has a single outpost in Cobb County. Continue reading “Aurelio’s Pizza, Marietta GA”
