Circumnavigating South Carolina – part seven

So, at last, we come to the close to the story about my South Carolina trip. About 800 miles in two days, but there were still a few stops to make. The first two were in the town of Greenwood, home of Lander University. Only the second stop was planned; the first was irresistible. Continue reading “Circumnavigating South Carolina – part seven”

Urban Stack, Chattanooga TN

We had not been planning to make any out-of-town trips in July, although, happily, we’re about to head out on the road in a couple of days. One evening in July, the baby began his little shtick of bringing Marie one book after another to “read” and we started looking at the damage, in some cases very nearly trashcan-worthy, that he’s ladled out to his favorite books. He barely lets us finish turning the four or five board pages before going to get another, and gnaws and tears at them while we’re not looking. He has quite a little library, but none of it’s in good shape. His favorite book, incidentally, seems to be one called That’s Not My Puppy. A replacement is sought. Ted’s Montana Grill, Atlanta GA

A couple of Fridays ago, I got an incredible treat. I had been inspired, earlier that week, to start doing a much better job simply photographing old buildings. Start following Roadside Rustic and you might be similarly moved. Maybe, every once in a while, I might come up with something a little better to share with you good readers, or maybe I’d just find a few good things for the old hard drive, or perhaps even something worth printing out one day. (Wouldn’t that be novel?) Continue reading “Ted’s Montana Grill, Atlanta GA”

Leon’s Full Service, Decatur GA

This is Marie, contributing an article about Leon’s Full Service in Decatur. The girlchild had other plans for the afternoon, so we went off with just the baby for a lunch together. These days that almost counts as a date meal! It helped that we had to park quite a ways away from the restaurant due to the rather appalling parking shortage in Decatur’s shopping district, so we got to pass by and dip into the cute little bookstore, Little Shop of Stories, along the way. Clock Drive-In, Greenville SC

Hello, my name is Grant, and I’m addicted to Urbanspoon.

See, I had this bright idea when I set out on this road trip. After the first three stops, I would just end up where the road took me. I would not plan ahead, and I would not look at Google Maps or my Urbanspoon wish list. I would just end up in Clemson, ask how to get to Greenville, drive around, stop at whatever looked interesting, maybe mosey up to Spartanburg, possibly detour through Anderson, and come home. I’d take pictures of neat signs or bridges, I would pull into any bookstores that caught my eye, and I wouldn’t be enslaved to a schedule or a timetable. And pigs would fly. Farm 255, Athens GA (CLOSED)

Ah, Farm 255. At last we meet, if only fleetingly.

Readers with long memories and a habit of reading between the lines have probably realized that there has been some restaurant or other in downtown Athens where, for months, I have tried to have a meal. Well, not consistently; I only ever head to that great little city every six or eight weeks or so. Anyway, not knowing at first that the restaurant – which is only open for supper – has an outdoor “farm cart,” I thought that I might not ever get the chance to stop. Then I learned of the cart, and, in the winter, made two visits, found it shuttered and left, scratching my head. Eventually, I read that the cart is not open during the colder months. Then they delayed opening it this year. Then I stopped going to Athens during the week. Continue reading “Farm 255, Athens GA (CLOSED)”

Johnny Rockets, Atlanta GA

So Johnny Rockets, a deeply 1980s concept restaurant which occasionally attempts to evoke the 1950s, invited some local media to come visit their newly reopened store at Phipps Plaza and learn about their company. The store in the Phipps Plaza mall had been there for many years, but the entire mall food court was gutted last year, along with several clothing stores on the upper floors, to make way for the Legoland Discovery Center. By all accounts, this attraction is doing very good business – there seems to be a ridiculous amount of things to do here – but the restaurant’s shindig was held at the time that Legoland closes each weekday, so we didn’t see any rampaging mobs of children, or gangs of obsessed grown-ups desperately digging through the bins in the gift shop looking for the last, elusive bricks that they need in order to replace the red half-height two-by-sixes that they lost when their Harry Potter Quidditch set fell off the mantle and some of the Legos fell into the fireplace.

Yeah, that’s right, I said LEGOS. I PLURALIZED your brand, Lego. And I might do it again. Continue reading “Johnny Rockets, Atlanta GA”
