It’s not as though I’ve driven up GA-400 way past the point where it becomes a regular-access, traffic-light managed corridor very often, but just about every time, I was distracted by an incredible collection of weird statues in front of a jukebox store called Cherokee Music between Cumming and Dawsonville. On both occasions that we visited Dahlonega’s Smith House for this blog, I said to myself that I should come by and photograph the menagerie. For no other reason, I felt that I owed it to the proprietors for reminding me of The Inspector, a DePatie-Freleng / UA cartoon that I loved as a kid. Carniceria Hispana, Doraville GA (CLOSED)
One morning, as the girlchild was finishing up her long Christmas break, I cruelly woke her long before the sun rose and dragged her to work with me. This was one of my short days, and I needed to visit my bank after I finished up, and one of its few local branches is right off Buford Highway, on Shallowford. Nam Phuong, Atlanta GA
The first time that I ever tried Vietnamese cooking, it was a year and a half ago, when I went up to Jimmy Carter Boulevard, that well-meaning but generally ineffective avenue in the Norcross area, to visit the much talked-about Nam Phuong. I left with that curious feeling of being pleased but dissatisfied. The food that I ate was good, but I didn’t have anybody to share the experience with, and I just sort of had to hope for the best. Character’s Famous BBQ, Adairsville GA
So the baby and I were having a boys’ day out, which pretty much is going to mean driving around the country and eating. We made our way from Jasper across to I-75 at Calhoun, passing by the original location of the very good Bub-Ba-Q and enjoying a really pleasant hour or so. It was an overcast day and slightly misty; every so often, the old highway ducked into little valleys with old, craggy trees looming over the road. It sometimes didn’t look like Georgia, but like an old Hammer Horror film. The baby fell asleep, not appreciating the imagery. Continue reading “Character’s Famous BBQ, Adairsville GA”
Quick Burger, Jasper GA
There was a Saturday not long ago when Marie had to go into work. The girlchild was also gone; her godfather was in town and she went to spend the day with him. I looked at the baby and told him, “It’s just the menfolk today, baby. What do you want to do?” Continue reading “Quick Burger, Jasper GA”
Persepolis, Sandy Springs GA
I dropped my friend Lakshmi, who writes The Rich Vegetarian, a line and asked whether she’d like to get some grub and talk shop. She suggested that we meet up at Persepolis, a restaurant north of the perimeter on Roswell Road that’s just about the living definition of venerable. It opened in 1996, but feels like it’s been here forever. We arrived as they were opening, and, anticipating that we were going to try their popular lunch buffet, they left us alone for a little while to consider their impressive, nicely-designed interior, the upscale effect of which, it must be said, is slightly dented by the presence of the flatscreen TV playing ESPN News. Woo Nam Jeong, Doraville GA
Marie and I took the baby over to Doraville on the Saturday before Christmas. Along the way to lunch, I pointed out White Windmill to her, telling her that’s the mean old place whose mean old hot tea hurted my poor little helpless tongue. Marie nodded and agreed that she’d have to try that tea sometime. Sometimes, dames just don’t listen. Continue reading “Woo Nam Jeong, Doraville GA”
