Late last month, we were very pleased to be invited for a truly nice meal at Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse along with several other local media types. Amusing myself, the first draft of this little story featured a little playful teasing that not as many active bloggers were present as there should be. After all, magazines get thrown out while blogs are forever, I said, knowing full well that wasn’t true as I typed it. Then I went and picked a fight with Roadfood.com about deleting pages off their site. I may be a playful tease, but there’s being silly and there’s opening yourself up for having some editor of some glossy magazine clear his throat about how I obviously know darn well that the internet’s every bit as ephemeral as the dead tree format and to hush my loud mouth. Seasons 52’s Spring Menu
This is Marie, contributing an article about the latest update to the Seasons 52 menu. We received an invitation to try out the latest dishes as a lunch rather than the blogger group visit we’d had the last few times.You may have read our articles about previous visits, and rather than a big event with several entrees presented, Grant and I had a cozy meal by ourselves. We need to do a few more just-us lunches together. It’s been remarked before that the baby has been remarkably well-behaved in restaurants, but he is still a baby – or rather, a toddler, with all that implies – so good behavior still does require a good bit of attention and pre-planning. The last visit we took to Seasons 52 on our own dime, sometime last year, was apparently on a day when his wiggles were in particularly large supply, and it wasn’t the most successful of meals. Remembering Roger at Steak ‘n Shake
I think that like all of us, even the directors of films that didn’t pass muster with him, I had to pause for a moment of heartbreak when Roger Ebert passed this month. I don’t believe there’s a person in the United States that has penned any kind of film or TV or music or literary or video criticism in the last thirty years who has done so without the influence of “Uncle Roger.” Since I’ve walked those avenues, both professionally and blog-a-fessionally, for more than twenty myself, I’ve always been acutely aware of his writing and his passions. I stopped reading him regularly quite some time ago, around the point where feature films stopped thrilling me the way that they once did, but I almost always went back to check his opinion on whatever movie I had just seen. Sweet Tomatoes, Kennesaw GA (take two)
This is Marie, doing a follow-up article about Sweet Tomatoes. If you recall Grant’s article from a while back praising their tomato soup, he alluded to how sad it was that a restaurant with Tomato in the name, who in fact have a tomato soup recipe that is better than most of their other soups, only has it once or twice a year – March is the month it appears regularly, but we’ve noticed that there is also an occasional week when it will show up outside that schedule. Rick’s Barbecue, Murfreesboro TN
So the road took us back to Tennessee for a couple of days. Marie had some time off and wanted to visit her family, and I didn’t quite have the hours accrued to take the days that she wanted, so instead, she took the baby and went south, and I took the girlchild and went north. A couple of years ago, I found my favorite Indian restaurant. It’s up in Asheville and it’s called Chai Pani.
