It was a very silly set of circumstances that led us to Puckett’s. Tory first suggested it when my daughter asked whether we could get some fried chicken in Nashville, only not, she underlined, the crazy hot lava death kind that I enjoy so much. I mentioned that to Tory and she said that Puckett’s would work for us. Unfortunately, they were closed for a private party on Friday evening, which is how we ended up at Tazza instead. Then at some point, my daughter, mercurial as ever, decided that she didn’t want fried, or any kind of chicken whatever, at any time in her life ever again. Blue Moon Pizza, Smyrna GA
This is Marie, contributing an article about a restaurant experience where we didn’t even have dessert. Unusual, I know.
We were temporarily teenagerless and Grant wanted to treat me to dinner at a place I picked. I thought back to the non-dairy days and recalled a dinner where I had quite a lovely salad but would have much preferred a big gooey slab of cheesy pizza, and picked Blue Moon Pizza. Noche Tequila & Tapas, Vinings GA (CLOSED)
The good people at Urbanspoon have, correctly (he said with entirely affected and playful pretension), determined that Atlanta is one of the hotbeds of great food writing among the hobbyists and bloggers, and organized a little get-together and happy hour for our community at Noche in Vinings a couple of weeks ago. I was glad to spend a little time meeting some Urbanspoon Prime users who make that service so terrific, and visiting with some of our friends, including Malika from Atlanta Restaurant Blog and Marilyn from Atlanta etc., and was glad to meet more bloggers, including fellow Bulldawg Sandy from Bella Vivere and Allison, The Newbie Foodie, who is relocating to the west coast soon. Figo Pasta, Atlanta GA
It’s not like we are scheming to visit every one of Figo’s locations in Atlanta, but the road took us to a fourth store on Saturday. The location on Collier Road was actually the chain’s first, and it opened in 2002 for carry-out only. The last decade has seen Figo grow to, at present, seven stores, and inspire at least two imitators in the southeast. We have written about Figo twice before, and don’t often craft revisit articles for the blog, but this was a fun little event that we wanted our readers to know about. About a month ago, when I was having some Mexican-fare lunches on Buford Highway, I mentioned that I owed Las Tortas Locas another visit. On that occasion, I got so wrapped up in the book that I was reading that I genuinely did not pay any attention to the food that I was eating. Figo Pasta, Alpharetta GA (CLOSED)
Last month, Marie and I were invited to come join the staff of the Alpharetta Figo, along with ninety-nine hundred other hungry people, for their grand reopening celebration. We’ve written about Figo previously, and so we knew that we could expect some very good eating. What surprised us, pleasantly, was how incredibly well the staff at this location handled one of the biggest, wildest mobs on one of the warmest evenings of the summer looking for a free dinner. The place was jammed with hot, sweaty, hungry people and, doors wide open, precious air conditioning escaped into the sticky Alpharetta sky, and that staff rose to the challenge like champions. Mexican Chains on Buford Highway
A few chapters ago, I mentioned my desire to visit more restaurants along the Buford Highway corridor, and sample more traditional and authentic tastes. I figured that Marie and I would enjoy some Asian restaurants together, but I would give some Mexican places a try by myself, as I enjoy traditional tacos and sauces more than she does. So, a couple of Fridays back, I made my way to visit two well-known stores. They’re both outposts of small Atlanta-based chains.
