Walking Around Cloudland Canyon

Despite the meticulous planning of the South Carolina trip, Marie and I are totally capable of making an agenda and then allowing it to just fall apart on us as the day goes on. I had thought about doing a detailed barbecue tour of northwest Georgia, sampling about four different places, one Saturday in October. We decided to schedule the trip on the weekend that promised the best fall colors and spend a good chunk of our day at Cloudland Canyon. This is a quite toddler-unfriendly destination, so Marie started the morning by dropping the baby with my mother and then, a little after ten, the girlchild sufficiently roused from a late morning’s sleep, the three of us got on the road to Calhoun. And so we went back to the Food Truck Park…

I did not specifically intend to revisit the Atlanta Food Truck Park on Howell Mill, but I’m very glad that we did, because we had a really great time and ate very well.

Marie had suggested fried chicken for supper a couple of Saturdays ago, and I was keen for her to try Curly’s Fried Chicken, which is located a little further down the opposite direction on Howell Mill, and which I had really enjoyed when I visited in the summer. In fact, the more I thought about it, the more keen I was for a visit. But the teenage girlchild started grumbling. Suddenly, she didn’t like chicken, and never had. You might be aware that teenagers can be just a little bit mercurial. Continue reading “And so we went back to the Food Truck Park…”

Scott’s Walk-Up Bar-B-Q, Cartersville GA

A reader had recommended that we give Scott’s Walk-Up Bar-B-Q in Bartow County a try. We didn’t have any specific plans for the second Saturday in October, and as our dance card started to fill with some major plans through the end of the year, I thought it a good idea for the four of us to just hop up the road for a quite short little trip. Scott’s is maybe half an hour from our place in Cobb, and while our hobbyist friends have mostly shied away from Cartersville – Dustin of the Georgia Barbecue Hunt is the only one that I can find who has paid Scott’s a visit – this place has received some solid writeups from newspapers and magazines, and has a devoted following. Noche Tequila & Tapas, Vinings GA (CLOSED)

The good people at Urbanspoon have, correctly (he said with entirely affected and playful pretension), determined that Atlanta is one of the hotbeds of great food writing among the hobbyists and bloggers, and organized a little get-together and happy hour for our community at Noche in Vinings a couple of weeks ago. I was glad to spend a little time meeting some Urbanspoon Prime users who make that service so terrific, and visiting with some of our friends, including Malika from Atlanta Restaurant Blog and Marilyn from Atlanta etc., and was glad to meet more bloggers, including fellow Bulldawg Sandy from Bella Vivere and Allison, The Newbie Foodie, who is relocating to the west coast soon. Go check out all their blogs, if you haven’t already! Continue reading “Noche Tequila & Tapas, Vinings GA (CLOSED)”

Fox’s Pizza Den, Brunswick GA

This is Marie, contributing an article about a pizza that the teenage girl in our life enjoyed enough to threaten matrimony against the chef. Mind you, she would have to jilt some cupcakes she proposed to recently in order to be free. Continue reading “Fox’s Pizza Den, Brunswick GA”

Smokin’ Po-Boys BBQ, Winder GA

About a year ago, I described a little drive that I took with my daughter and baby boy up through Hoschton and Winder to Athens and back, passing two barbecue joints along the way with which I was unfamiliar. I intended then to come back to Winder, and it is actually becoming depressing to realize just how long it is taking us to get back to some of these places. There’s never enough time or money, but I really would like to provide a little better documentation of the world of barbecue restaurants in this region, and we’re not getting any younger. Probably not the wisest course of action to think about such things after spending about five hours wandering about campus, visiting the ol’ comic book store and listening to early ’80s British chart music, honestly. Nostalgia Burns in the Hearts of the Bulldogs

I gave in to an absurdly nostalgic day in the Classic City a couple of Fridays back, revisiting old haunts, walking around, having some beer and reading. I did not eat as much as I might have; my trip coincided with a social media-led lunch at Weaver D’s, the world-famous meat-n-three that has been having some financial difficulties. When word got out that Dexter Weaver needed his guests to come on back, they did so in droves. I don’t know whether it sparked enough of a reminder to get people back here regularly; time will tell. It didn’t for Harold’s Barbecue in Atlanta. Nevertheless, there was enough of a mob and parking was impractical, so I wished him well and moved on.
